About the sport of wrestling and wrestlers

What Strategies Do Wrestlers Use?

Wrestling is not just about using your strength. You need to have interesting and captivating strategies. If you approach the sport without intelligence, then you are likely to suffer a series of defeats. It will take you longer to recover from them and you will be doing significant long term damage to your health. It therefore pays to understand the rudimentary strategies which are used in wrestling.

1. Preparation: If you are afraid to lose a wrestling match then you are likely to lose it. Doubt makes you tentative and that means that you will not be aggressive in your approach. Try to play according to your style. Do not try to adapt to the style of your opponent because they are eminently much better than you in that particular style. Do not relent in the attack unless you feel that a passive approach might reduce the number of unforced errors that you are committing.

2. Pace: You need to use the pace to your advantage. For example you need to mix up your balancing techniques with the pace that you can generate. Do not forget the power of surprise for your advantage. It is important to have a variety of strokes which you can use in different situations. The moment you become predictable is the moment that you will lose out in the game.

3. Power: If you make the judgment that on average you are more powerful than your opponent then you should use that as a competitive advantage. There is no particular problem with overpowering your opponent. Some people might argue that you are in effect “winning ugly” but the truth is that you will be on the victorious podium. However perfect technique can always beat strength.

4. Endurance: You need to ensure that you are straining the resources of your opponent. That means that you ensure that they carry your weight for long periods during the match. This is a particularly useful trick if you are heavier than your opponent. At the same time you need to be wary of the fact that they can use the chance to topple you. The top position is a vulnerable one in wrestling.

5. Confidence: If you have done your homework in terms of practice then there is absolutely no reason why you should not be confident in your skills. Make sure that you take the time to showcase some of the things that you have done during the practice session. Do not take a cocky attitude because it tends to turn off everyone as you try to get the crowd on your side.

Prior to the wrestling match, you need to be prepared for all eventualities. You should build your endurance to such a level that you can expect to fulfill the match requirements. One of the most frustrating situations in wrestling is where you lose a match just because you were too tired to carry on. These are things which you can avoid with the right type of conditioning right from the beginning.
